Designer and decorator. He studied architecture, but engaged in all genres of the applied arts. He started to work independently in 1882, producing his first wallpaper and textile designs in 1883. From the late 1880s onwards his woven and printed fabric designs were commissioned by such prestigious companies as Alexandre Morton’s, Thomas Wardle’s, Turnbull & Stockdale’s, Tomkinson and Adam’s, as well as by major department stores including Liberty’s and Wylie and Lockhead’s. He joined the Art Workers Guild in 1884. His textiles and other designs were exhibited in 1888,1889,1896 and 1903. He designed many buildings, furniture and fabrics in England and abroad until his death in 1941. In 1940 he was awarded a Gold Medal by the Royal Institute of British Architects.
