In 1894 he was one of the founders of the artists’ colony in Worpswede. Although primarily a painter, he also engaged in commercial design, illustrated books, and designed artistic objects of practical use and book-plates. He met Rainer Maria Rilke during a trip to Florence in 1898. The poet wrote an essay about his art. Vogeler moved to the Soviet Union in 1932 and worked in Moscow until 1942. He died in Kazakhstan.
