Vaszary, János (1867 - 1939)

Painter. He started his studies at the Technical Drawing School in Budapest, then went on to the Julian Academy in Paris. Inspired by French art, he drew on French-inspired plein-air Naturalism, Post- Impressionism and the style of the Fauves. He produced powerfully expressive, dramatic pictures during the First World War. Vaszary designed fabrics at the time when in his paintings he was depicting scenes from peasant life. His carpets, tapestries and upholstery fabrics were honoured with a bronze prize at the Paris International Exhibition of 1900 and a diplme d’honneur at the International Exhibitions in Turin (1902) and in Milan (1906). In 1906 he resigned his membership at the Society for Applied Arts and gave up textile designing.
