Sovánka, István (1858 - 1944)

One of the best Hungarian glass designers of the Art Nouveau who also followed international trends.
His early works were characterized by Hungarian ornamentation executed in Historicist style. Many
of his (technically outstanding) glass items were produced using layered etching and were ornamented
with Secession-style floral patterns, landscapes and animals. He was unable to put into effect his ideas
and plans concerning mass production, which he discussed in a letter written to Jenő Radisics. A great
part of his pieces were executed in the factory of Zay-Ugrócz and after 1904 in that of Sepsibükszárd.
