French coin and medal artist working in Paris. He was regarded by contemporaries as the leading, and most influential person in French numismatic art. He began his studies in the painting class of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, then became a student of the sculptor Dumont. Later he attended Poscarme’s numismatics class. He spent a number of years in Italy with the aim of studying art. He regularly exhibited his works at the Paris Salon after 1882. His work was received favourably at the Paris International Exhibition of 1889 and was awarded a Grand Prix in 1900. The extensive influence he exerted on other artists was partly due to his activities as a teacher. Following the death of Jules- Clément Chaplain, he was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1905; later he was appointed to a professorship at the Ecole des Beaux- Arts.
