German painter and graphic artist of Czech origin. He was an enthusiastic traveller. He travelled to
England and Paris in 1898, then visited Japan in 1900-1901 with the aim of studying the art of woodcut.
In 1903 and 1904 he worked in Vienna. After 1905 he lived in Berlin for several decades, visiting
Egypt in 1911 and Asia later on.
