British painter, illustrator, aesthete, a follower of the reform movement led by Ruskin, Morris and the
Pre- Raphaelites to renew the art of design. In his theoretical writings he announced the need to
reform art and advocated the decorative function of lines. He renewed book design, most notably
children’s book illustration; he was active in several branches of the applied arts. In 1900 he visited
Hungary, exerting an influence on the modem Hungarian artists.
