Princess Alexandra Pavlovna (1783–1801) daughter of Tsar Paul I (1796–1801), was the first wife of Joseph Anton Habsburg (1776–1846), better known as Palatine Joseph. The dinner set and biscuit statue group forming part of her dowry are particularly prized items in the Museum of Applied Arts’ porcelain collection. All of the serving dishes of various shapes – the soup bowl on its base and vessels for serving roast meat, sauces, garnishes, pates, spices, essences, fruits and delicacies, and for cooling glasses and mixing drinks – are rarities, since the St Petersburg porcelain manufactory principally served the pomp of the Tsar’s court. There are few collections in Europe which feature such pieces.
The set is in the neo-classical style, with restrained ornamentation painted at the edges of sections formed by the shape of the object, and consisting of budding rose stems on a gold ground, and the finelycrafted handles – masks and artichokes – are gilded. Framed with beads, in the centres of bowls and plates and the sides of soup plates, are little polychromic paintings of ancient Roman buildings and ruins, taken from a series of etchings of Rome by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778).
