Early Ottoman Carpets with endless geometric designs of the kind found on paintings by the German painter Hans Holbein Jr. (1497/8–1543) are called "Holbein Rugs". The small pattern version of the Holbein Rug is more common. Belonging to the group having the more traditional blue-green field, it has a lower knot density and higher pile than the Museum's other small pattern Holbein Rug (MAA inv. nr. 8546), and its broad kilim weave tapering towards the ends puts it into to the less refined group of Holbein Rugs. The execution of the rug – the colouring of the Holbein guls and arabesque crosses, the irregularly alternating red-ivory and red-ochre colour pairs, the departure from tradition in the border and other characteristics already mentioned – is suggestive of village carpets. What makes this rug so valuable is that at the kilim-woven top edge, an approximately 40 cm section of the end finish, has remained in its original condition. The edge was folded over and stitched down a width of 2–3cm.
