The figure is rising from his bed, and is dressed as an Augustinian monk, holding a loaf of bread in his right hand. This representation refers to the miraculous recovery of the saint. According to the legend, the Virgin had appeared to him during his illness, and helped him to become healthy again by giving him bread. The composition of the small statue follows that of the marble group on the high altar of the church of S. Nicola da Tolentino in Rome, reproducing its right side figure on a smaller scale. Analogous pieces made of bronze and terracotta are in an English private collection and in Rome, in the Museo di Palazzo Venezia.
