Running deer and rows of crested birds with large beaks, stepping to the left, alternate among wavy, vertical flowery boughs enriched with rosettes and palmets. A silk fabric with identical pattern was exhibited at the 1873 Vienna World Exhibition as upholstery (see Lützow 1875 pp.63 and 284.)
A similar fabric can now be found in the Viennese Österreichisches Museum für Angewandte Kunst (see: Angela Völker: Historische Dekorstoffe und ihre mittelalterlichen Vorbilder. In: Alte und moderne Kunst, 28. /1983, Nr. 186-187/, 1-7:5, pict.9, Inv.No. T.2007 - see here).
The pattern was modelled on an Italian silk fabric from the 14th-15th century, now in the Viennese Museum (see Völker 1986 p.5, pict.8, Inv.No. T.820) and is illustrated in Fischbach 1874 plate 47/B.
A similar, fourteenth century fabric was exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Inv.No. 8361 - 1863) - it is a reflected variant of the 19th century one, described above.
