One of the museum’s early carpet acquisitions is a late 17th-century Caucasian dragon rug bought in 1894 from Boris Sparber. On the crimson brick red field are three ivory palmettes alternating with three ivory field "blazon" palmettes. The space between the palmettes in the lower row, above leaves and vines is filled with a stylized flaming lion, and in the upper row it is filled with dragons. The palmettes face upward in the lower two rows and downward in the top row. The irregular central field has a more rigidly formed "vine cup" border on a yellow field. There is a late 17th or early 18th century Karabagh or Shirvan carpet fragment with a similar border and field but with a more regularly formed and narrower central field held by the Washington Textile Museum.
