St. George, turning to the right, prepares to drive his drawn sword through the dragon lying before him with its head raised. The dynamic composition has several analogous pieces of the same size and period. Among others, works in the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe and in an English private collection.

The graphic model for the relief – the engraving of Antonio Tempesta, end of l6th century (see here) – was identified by Erika Tietze-Conrat. (E. Tietze-Conrat: Die Erfindung im Relief. Ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der Kleinkunst. Wien 1920, p. 165, 169.)
Our work is one of the best among the analogous ones, and may be attributed to Dominikus Stainhart on the basis of certain details, particularly on the form of the background.
