The velveteen is printed in burgundy red on an apricot ground. The pattern consists of leaved pineapples, springing from a divided plant motif, alternating with large, seven-lobed palmets with smaller palmets inside. The centre of the smaller palmets is filled with rosettes and plane leaves.
The pattern is a stylized version of Italian velvet models of the second half of the fifteenth century. The printed patterns were registered on August 30th, 1884 (see Wardle, T.: Patternbook. No. 117 - Manchester, Whitworth Art Gallery. Inv.No. 14008). Its companion piece can be found in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
