Pendant - with the figure of a pelican

It is a scroll-like open-worked shape, richly illustrated, made of asymmetrical mouldings and pairs of volutes: a champlevé and ronde-bosse enamel pelican mother with spread wings and three nestlings. The topic, the pelican feeding its nestlings with its own blood, is used as an allegory of marital love. The jewel is an engagement pendant favoured in the Baroque period. Its maker also gave an important role to the precious stones: in the mindset of the period the red ruby – 18 pieces of which appear on the work – recalls the idea of a drop of blood, and is the symbol of love as well. The lower part of the pendant is decorated with three hanging pearls. The impact of Daniel Mignot’s jewel plans (active in Augsburg in the 1600s) can be seen on the ornamentation of the object (see here).
