Monstrance

The foot is lobed, consisting of eight sections and decorated with alternating four-lobed and oval medallions, with the portraits of the evangelists and Hungarian saints (St. Stephen, St. Elisabeth, St. Ladislaus and the Blessed Margaret, shown without the nimbus). The node is enclosed by six, Gothic architectural niches, each containing a figure of a male saint. The top part of the monstrance imitates Gothic architecture. A tapering, octagonal cone rises out of the node, holding the lunule, which is decorated with rubies and diamonds, is protected by a cylindrical glass cover. On the two sides of the central glass cylinder, the figures of the apostles are shown in three compartment rows. The glass cover is surmounted by a rich, architectural, hexagonal compartment, with the figure of Virgin Mary, holding the child Christ on her arm. The enamelled conical spine beyond this compartment imitates green, white and red roof tiles. The Calvary scene is placed on the tip, with two male saints - almost certainly a mistake - standing on the two sides of the cross. They cannot be identified on the basis of their attributes, just like most of the other figures on the monstrance.

According to information kindly supplied by András Szilagyi, the basic form of this object goes back to the Gothic monstrance of Felka - although this piece was enriched with various other motifs by István Fülöp Link.
