The unique “Halas style” lace is a world-famous representative of Hungarian needle laces. Its creation and the characteristic patterns of its early pieces are related to Árpád Dékáni (1861–1931), the art teacher of the Reformed secondary school of Kiskunhalas and a pioneer of the home industry movement. He based his uniquely Hungarian style on Art Nouveau, and on his own applied arts education as well as his ethnographic collections. Typical of his style are his whimsical lines, his diverse and rich plant patterns and cute animal illustrations. The unique technique of accomplishing the lace according to his designs was created by Mária Markovits (1875–1954), undergarment seamstress. Its specialty is due to its firm contoured canvas stitched fillings, its playfully waving contours, loose connection stitches and delicate colours. They made an elegant lace decoration of female clothing in the form of fans, ruffs and cuffs.
