From the 1600s, with the omission of the matrix, lace patterns became ever freer. The regular patterns were replaced by gently meandering thin tendrils, smaller and larger floral and leaf motifs applying an increasingly wider variety of ornamental stitches depictions of animals and humans are also frequent. The presented, richly illustrated, perfectly executed needle lace still shows the bound style elements of the Renaissance, the regular circles not being omitted fully. On the other hand, the plastic tendrils leaning on one another, the rich floral pattern and the early binding elements between the larger patterns are all characteristic to Baroque laces. The lobe-patterned, round edge further enhances the airy impression.
