From the end of the 16th century a significant change in style could be discerned in the famed, flourishing metalsmith centres of northern Hungary. The majority of masters in Kassa (today Košice, Slovakia) and Locse (today Levoca, Slovakia) and the mining towns relied on traditional types, forms, and solutions. The top craftsmen, however, were increasingly open to the gradually infiltrating influences, primarily from the southern German regions.
This masterpiece with etched designs, known in the literature as the "arabesque tankard", was most certainly created under such inspiration. The entire surface is covered in arabesque, ribbon ornamentation. The decoration is based on the compositions found in mid-16th century southern German pattern sheets. Hannelore Muller in her work European Silver. The Thyssen- Bornemisza Collection (London, 1986) published a similar piece (cat. no. 81).
The form of the cup follows the characteristic mannerist type of German Renaissance metal art: a strongly broadening body resting on a base, with a curved, tilted handle and domed lid. In the centre of the lid is a mounted coin issued by Emperor Maximilian II (1557–1576). Before being acquired by Henrik Egger (†1915), the cup was owned by the family of Baron Apor until the end of the 19th century.
