The rolled borders of the plates depict the figures of the four virtues, Fides, Fortitudo, Caritas, and Spes. Dated 1567 beside Fortitudo, maker's mark M.G. at Spes. The pressed middle decorations show the Crucifixion, with an inscription: ECCE AGNVS DEIV QUI TOL LIT PECCATA MVNDI. The mark of the engraver MV is on the left of the scene. The monogram of the owner M. S. is above it and the date, embossed in black: 1572. The back plate is decorated with a representation of the Resurrection, and, with the inscription ERO MORS TVA O MORS MOR (SVS ERO TWS INFERNE... The triple-banded back is without decoration. The top of the back is made of blue and white cotton yarn. According to archives the maker's mark M.G. referred to the bookbinder Matthaeus or Mathias Gartner, who was active between 1563 and 1587 (cf. Haebler 1928 vol.l.pp. 150-153).
