The infant Jesus steps forward with his right foot, wearing a robe, and bearing the cross on his shoulder. In his left hand is a basket containing the Instruments of the Passion — hammer, a whip, a bundle of switches.

This representation became a well-known iconographic theme in the baroque period, as a result of the influence of the devotional literature of the Counter-Reformation. Its model must have been the composition of one of the engravings of Hieronymus Wierix, made in Antwerp, at the beginning of the 17th century.
