Târgu Mureş-born graphic artist Klára Tamás (1946–2021) specialized in posters and books. She also put the lessons of her graphic works into use in tapestry designs. She made her first tapestries in Romania, before moving to New York in 1992.

She designed The Phoenix in 2004; the composition was inspired by the 11 September 2001 terrorist attack on the New York World Trade Center. This large piece was woven in China, with the use of the wide palette of colours specified by the artist, on the model of Aubusson tapestries. The monumental work is composed of mosaic-like details, with ruins and molten metal structures in the foreground, which were inspired by the original photographs, above which the phoenix, a symbol of rebirth and resurrection, takes wing.

In 2021, Klára Tamás donated two large tapestries to the Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest The Phoenix and Davids and Goliaths (inv. no. 2021.458.1).
