The composition contains several figures, such as the Virgin, St. John the Apostle and Joseph of Arimathea, and five more figures. Its model is the type of the famous altarpiece of Rubens in Antwerp cathedral, made in 1614. The immediate model must have been one of the engravings made by Benoit Audran of the altarpiece of Charles Le-Brun with a similar theme. (One of the engravings is in Lille, Musée des Beaux-Arts, 1684). This attribution is possible on the basis of the fine elaboration, minute details and the material of the relief - most of the reliefs made by Liege masters are made of pear-wood - and the fact that Cognoulle preferred to use the different compositions of the Paris artist family Audran, well-known mainly in the western and northern parts of Europe.
