Footed cup

This goblet is a delicately modelled Rococo work of the 18th century master of a Brassó goldsmith dynasty. It is one of the goldsmith works solely typical of the oeuvre of Mihály May II (1684–1712). The octagonal goblet is made of parcel-gilt silver. On its waved-edge, bulging base there is a scaly, leafy scroll pattern. Its stem is short. On the side of the body, among leafy ribbon-festoons there are barnacle, rosette and scale ornamented smaller grid scrolls, alternated by larger scrolls in leafy festoons. The most characteristic ornament of the master’s work is the fine execution of the so-called “Laub- und Bendelwerk”. The inside of the vessel, its rim, the frames of the side fields, the stem and base edges are gilt. One of the artworks analogous to this object in size and ornaments is possessed by the Hungarian National Museum and another one by the Germanisches Nationalmuseum of Nuremberg.
