Fan - Athalia's explosion from the Temple of Jerusalem

The—presumably Old Testament—depiction on the leaf, which is framed with Oriental-style coloured flowers, is unsolved. Two warriors lead a young and seemingly warlike woman before a young ruler seated on a throne. Beside the throne stands a elderly high priest, who is offering his right hand to the female figure. Behind him—in the right-hand corner of the leaf—is a large sacrificial altar with blazing firewood on its top and with sacrificial vessels next to it. From the background armed soldiers watch the scene, as do two figures in a kind of theatre box at the very back. On the left, in the foreground, is a dog. In the middle of the verso, in a frame similar to that of the recto, stands a young girl. On its surface, meticulously worked and providing a continuous surface when opened, a small landscape can be seen at the bottom and small staffage figures among flowers, birds and dolphins at the top. The bottommost parts of the sticks display a grooved pattern when the fan is closed.
