The virtuosity of forms and ideas can be clearly seen in these naturalistic - mostly exotic - motifs. The combination of ornaments creates a consciously bizarre effect. Most of the bowls are of sea-shells, encrusted with mythological monster figures. Some of the etchings follow the themes of another, similar series by Master Enea Vico, published in 1543 in Rome. It seems certain that the main aim of this series was to let the imagination range freely rather than to create perfect drawings.
