The statue of the naked male figure is in contraposto, with his right hand on the hilt of his sword. It is a motif characteristic of the baroque representations of the theme "The Decollation of Argus". Considering this and on the basis of the attributes (the winged head-piece, the pair of wings at the ankles of the figure), we may assume that the theme of the representation is not Perseus and Medusa, but Mercury. In the collection of the Esterhazy treasury the work is first mentioned in the inventory of 1693: "Statua Eburnea Mercury". (OL The Archives of the Ducal Line of the Esterhazy Family. Rep. 8. Fasc.
