The manufacturer of the object, P. J. Brocard originally specialised in the restoration of antique applied arts artefacts. It can therefore be understood that once he learnt the Islam glass techniques – especially that of enamelling – his works were inspired by the style of thirteenth and fourteenth century Syrian glasses. Besides the stylised Oriental patterns he frequently applied Roman and Renaissance – mainly Venetian – vessel shapes. Brocard presented his glasses at the 1867 Paris World Fair with such a great success, that from that point he was known as the master of enamel painting.
