Variations of this velvet pattern were woven in Venice from the early 16th century onwards. This piece is decorated with large five-lobed palmets, enclosing two or more smaller palmets, with a small rosette in the middle. The space between the palmets is divided by small crowns. These soft, light, large - patterned velvets were usually worn as secular clothing, as can be seen in the portraits of the leaders of the Venetian Republic. There is a similar piece of cloth in the Prato Museo del Tessuto , and variations, woven in the 16th-17th century, can be found in many collections of textiles. The embroidery represents the so-called "San Marco" type of Venetian liturgical embroidery, with three-domed architecture. The back orphrey shows Mary with the child Christ, St. Martin and the beggar, St. John the Baptist on the vertical line, and busts of St. Peter and St. Paul on the horizontal line. The front orphrey is decorated with figures of a bishop as yet unidentified and St. Roch on the vertical, and the protomartyrs St. Laurence and St. Stephen on the horizontal line.
