The round surface is decorated with a smiling female profile, looking to the left, in flat relief. Her loose untied hair fills the top part of the picture. This brooch, inspite of its traditional name, was probably worn in the hair, fixed with a long, straight hairpin. The Smile is a part of a series - the illustrations of an identical medallion are published in Marx 1897 (plate XI. ill. 16. and Marx 1898 (plate XXXII, ill. 22), together with a piece of similar size on ill.20, depicting a smiling young woman, looking back over her shoulder.
