The surface of the plate is gold-veined on a black background it is framed by gold lines. There is a rosette in each corner. The middle shows a scene, painted in red, in a gilt oval wreath: Hercules fighting the hydra. The scene is marked: [...] Viertein (?). The back plate of similar decoration depicts an oval field with a kneeling bearded man, with the figure of Fortune behind him. The saddle is divided into two small fields at the top and a broader one at the bottom, all painted with red volutes and tendrils, enriched with a gold- veined background. The second field shows the gilt title: Thomanns/Annalen. The French-style, blue endpapers are framed with gilt leather, with a leather slot and a gilt etching. The headband is sewn with blue and gold threads.
