The gilt decoration are the same on the front and back plates: a lily in each corner of the double- lined border, then a stripe of circles, leaves and dots, enclosed by triple lines. The inner corners of the surface are enriched with lobed arabesque motifs. The whole surface is covered with lilies. The spine is divided into six compartments by five false bands the decoration of the compartments is identical. The second compartment bears the gilt title: RECHERCHES / SUR/ JEAN GROLIER, with the author's name in the third compartment: LE ROUX DE LINCY. The bottom of the spine is marked with PARIS 1866 inscription. The plates and the borders of the spine are also gilt. The leather-jointed endpaper has a gilt leather border its surface is made of white, handmade paper. Josef Zaehnsdorf (1816-1886) was a Hungarian- born bookbinder, who worked in London since 1837. The tool is gilt, the headband is sewn of white, red and blue silk threads. The title page on title appears in two, circular medallions with the following inscriptions: IEHAN GROLIER CHEIR TRESORIER DE FRANCE" and "LA REVNION DV DOMAINE DE FRANCE MDLVII. The medallion engravings and the illustrations were made by Adam Pilinski (1810-1887) and pressed by Ch. Barousse.
