The 1909 Spring Exhibition of the Hungarian Applied Arts Association
On 24 March 1909, the Applied Arts Association opened a furniture exhibition that ran throughout the spring and summer. The teacher Béla Vass curated the exhibition, aiming for a Hungarian character, but in a somewhat European sense. There were actually two parts to the exhibition – Hungarian lace and Hungarian furniture (Pesti Hírlap, 1 April 1910). The lace designs were displayed in glass cabinets. For the furniture, there was a series of interiors: a dining room by Róbert Nádler; a study by Béla Pálinkás; a guest room by Béla Jánszky; an interior by Miklós Menyhért (Mederl); and a bedroom by Bálint Fehérkuthy and Lukács Dósa. Home furnishings were accompanied by a mass of artistic trifles and functional items, such as Professor Nádler’s leather batiks, Ida Nagy’s bobbin lace, Jenő Fischof’s leatherwork, Lujza Rauscher’s delicate, technically outstanding silk batik items, bags, purses and portfolios designed by Artúr Lakatos, and stained glass by Károly Majoros.
