The 1899 Autumn Furniture Exhibition in the Museum of Applied Arts
An exhibition that ran in the Great Hall of the Museum of Applied Arts for only a few days in autumn 1899 displayed furniture for six rooms privately commissioned from architect Frigyes Spiegel and College of Applied Arts lecturer Ödön Faragó. The designer’ intentions were in general well interpreted in the work of the artisans who executed them. The cabinetmakers Mihály Matusiák (salon) and Viktor Bányai displayed excellent workmanship in carrying out Spiegel’s plans, and the good upholstery work for these came from the workshop of Jakab Róth. Faragó designed the furnishing of four rooms, for which the woodwork was carried out by Károly Bodon (dining room and bedroom) and Lipót Prohászka (salon and study), and the upholstery in the workshop of Gábor Steinbach.
