Royal Danish Porcelain Factory, Copenhagen
After 1885 the factory, which had been founded in 1775, employed Arnold Emil Krog (1856-1831), a painter, architect, graphic artist, designer and ceramist all in one person, as art director. It was the chemical researcher Adolphe Clement (1860-1933) who perfected the technique of underglaze painting, which became a distinctive feature of the manufactory. The Grand Prix of the Paris International Exhibition of 1889 was an expression of the contemporary recognition enjoyed by the company. After 1892 the chemical researcher Valdemar Engelhardt employed a crystal glazing technique on the company’s products, which were usually designed by Krog. Krog’s sprightly animal designs of novel presentation won another Grand Prix, this time at the Paris International Exhibition of 1900, further boosting the company’s reputation.
