Apáti Abt, Sándor (1870 - 1916)

Sculptor and ceramic artist. Between 1885 and 1888 he studied sculpting at the Royal Hungarian School of Applied Arts in Budapest, then continued his studies in Munich. After his return to Budapest, he became a student of Alajos Stróbl, working in the master’s studio. On György Ráth’s suggestion he found employment in the Zsolnay factory at Pécs, where he designed and fashioned numerous small sculptures, ornamental objects and ceramic paintings between 1898 and 1908. A man of a powerful and original personality, he created works of emphatic force. He taught at the factory’s apprentice school. From 1909 right up to his death, he held a teaching post at the School of Technical Drawing in Budapest. Around the turn of the 20th century he also designed ornaments and stamps.
