It was fifty years ago, in 1974, that Ernő Rubik, who at the time was an assistant professor at the Hungarian College of Applied Arts, invented the ‘Cube.’ The Magic Cube, as it was originally marketed, found world fame as Rubik’s Cube, and has become an iconic item in many a design collection. The brand is currently owned by a Canadian company. There are few Hungarian design products that bear the name of their maker. They include László József Bíró’s ballpoint pen (named biro in English, birome in Spanish, biron in French), and Ernő Rubik’s puzzle, which bears the inventor’s name in all languages.
