Tile

The square-shaped tiles were used to cover walls - two of each creating the pattern. In checkrow, the one with the flying swallow motif should be placed above and also beside the one with the butterfly thus the tiles alternate both horizontally and vertically. The scrolling tendrils, the leaves must have created the impression of an arbour. The bird and the butterfly are relief-shaped, while only the contours of the flowery-leafy bough between them protrude from the base. This «tube-technique» was fairly often applied on tiles, preventing the melting of the colours. The varied use of transparent glazes creates rich shades of one and the same colour. On one of the tile pairs, the background of the motifs is plain the other has a relief, geometrical background. The leaves are green against a brown or brown against a green background, the flowers and the butterfly are violet, while the swallow is black and white.
