Tejszínes kanna

The rim of the round foot of the cream jug is decorated with a leaved frieze above the string-of- pearl edge. The broad, cylindrical body shows a chased belt of spear leaves at the bottom in the middle, there are cannelures. The stout top is enriched with garlands and ribbons, revealing medallions in string of pearls on both sides. There is an engraved coat of arms in the medallions, showing a shield, rounded at the top and bottom, pierced per fess, with three birds in the middle. The escutcheon is surmounted by a nine-pointed coronet. The coffee pot has an identical decoration, but the body is pear-shaped, the high top part is conical, showing armed medallions on the sides. The curved spout is enriched with leaves at the bottom and the top. The lid is jointed, domed, decorated with strings of pearls and leaves. The finial of a broad rim is placed in the centre of the ribbed top. The handles of both pots are double-scrolled, with leaf motifs at the points where they join the body. They are enriched with two bone ring inlays. The oval sugar bowl was made without bone inlays and is equipped with two handles. Its decoration is identical with the other pieces. Several similar sets were modelled on these elegant, Neo- Classicist pieces up till the 1870s and 1880s by the son of Charles Odiot the most outstanding one among them is the set made for Oscar II, King of Sweden, which is now in Stockholm (see M. Rosenberg: Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen. 3rd issue, Vol. IV, Berlin, 1928, p.302).
