The organically unfolding shape of the central motif of the stylized tree shows the plant in its entirety: the large system of roots under the surface of the ground, the trunk, and the foliage. The tree of life as a title and symbolic theme also appears in other works of the artist that employ similar techniques.
Zsuzsa Szenes often used a technique she called ‘wool-stitching’: she attached the coloured unspun wool yarn to the base fabric in free swirling shapes, with slightly spun, coloured wool yarn, exploiting the playful graphic possibilities of the technique.
