Tapestry - Eagles above the tomb of a hero

In the foreground, there is a village cemetery, with a newly erected wooden grave-post, decorated with ribbons, in the centre. The wooden tower of the church at Kalotaszeg appears in the background, behind gentle slopes. The top two-third of the tapestry is filled with sky and clouds, and the huge eagle figures «guarding» the tomb from above. The gloomy colours - brown, steel-gray, blue, bluish gray - refer to the allegorical meaning of the topic and express misgivings for the tragic consequences of the First World War, the defeat and disaster. The tapestry is bordered with the repetition of geometrical motifs, used mainly on the carvings of grave-posts. The artists at Gödöllő intentionally used the shapes and motifs of Transylvanian folklore. The churches with wood steeples, woodcarvings, Transylvanian embroideries preserve a rich folkloric culture in this region, creating a new opportunity to define a special, national trend of Art Nouveau in Hungary.
