Finely veined reddish-brown jasper plaques form the sides of the hexagonal body, framed with silver borders with painted enamel floral ornament. A piece with similar decoration and bearing the same master's mark is in the Schatzkammer der Residenz in Munich and has been attributed to Marx Merzenbach (Seling 1980, vol. 3, no. 1517/d, p. 191).
Listed among the Nádasdy treasures at their castle of Sárvár, the canister was among the family property sequestered and taken to Vienna after the execution of Ferenc Nádasdy for treason in 1670. It was from the imperial Schatzkammer that it was acquired for Pál Esterházy's treasury at Fraknó around 1690.
Although such pieces are often described as ginger caddies, there is some doubt that they were indeed used for the storing of ginger.
