In England, the middle-class trend that broke the dominance of the French stylistic trends that had hitherto played the leading role in Europe was called the neo-classical style. In its spread, a great role was played by Robert Adam (1728–1792), who spent time in Italy, France and Dalmatia and who with his three brothers established an architect’s office and a firm, too. From among the cabinetmakers of the time, he employed Thomas Chippendale (1718–1779), a master from the previous period who created the style named after him, and Thomas Sheraton (1751–1806), who settled in London in 1790. In our collection we preserve three excellent book cabinets covered in light satinwood veneer and supplied with mahogany, jacaranda and palm wood inlay and painted decoration the design of which can be linked to his name. The book cabinet was from the mid- 17th century on an indispensable item of furniture in the house of a cultured Englishman. Sheraton’s simple and lightly constructed, albeit stable and elegant, furniture for storing books also function as salon cabinets, and was also accessories not only for studies, but also for reception rooms. The salon cabinet by him that is exhibited here stands on slim, balustered, turned legs, which are lined together by a curving open shelf. The wide, divided drawer in its lower part was suited to the storage of writing materials also. The harmonious overall impression of the piece is given emphasis by the turned decorative urns of the ledge.
