The 16th/17th century Herat Safavid carpet belonged to the museum’s first director, Dr György Ráth (1828–1905). A lawyer and art collector, Ráth furnished his villa at 2 Városligeti Avenue, in Budapest, with more than 1,000 art works, including some oriental carpets. Archive photographs show that the carpet was hung on the wall of the ‘Gems Room’ in the villa. We have no information on the provenance of Ráth’s carpets, but he probably acquired them via art dealers. The scarlet field of the Herat carpet has a pattern of scrolling vines with palmettes and blossoms and an unusual border of cartouches of different colours and shapes on a dark blue field, a design type that is more often attributed to 17th-century central Persia. Despite its fragmentary condition, the design gives the impression of being complete.
