Covered with green and yellow glazed tiles produced at the Zsolnay factory in Pécs, the roof is a characteristic, almost iconic, part of the building of the Museum of Applied Arts, which was designed by Gyula Pártos and Ödön Lechner. In May 2011, to raise awareness of the urgency of restoring the dilapidated monument, the Museum announced a jewellery design competition, entitled Zsolnay Forever! Contemporary artists were to put to new use the removed roof tiles, by designing and producing original, innovative and fashionable jewellery that reflected on the building. Those entries that were exhibited were added to the Museum’s collection after the competition results were announced.
