Reliquary cross

It has a wavy, quatrefoiled stepped foot with a high relief voluted framework. Its surface is decorated with four scenes of the Passion of Christ: I. Bearing the Cross, 2. Preparation, 3 The Nailing on the Cross, 4. Setting up the Cross. The foot is connected to the stem with a beaded moulding. The stem is decorated with the statues of the symbols of the four Evangelists — Matthew (angel), Mark (lion), Lucas (ox), John (eagle). Their wings are closed below and are joined in a volute-shaped ending above, forming the base of the cross. The front side of the cross is ornamented with ground glass the rear side has thirteen pieces of rectangular panels with scenes of the Passion of Christ. These were made after the woodcuts of Dürer's Little Passion series from 1509—11. (Pages B.24— 25., B.27., B.33—37., B.39—41., B. 43. B. 45.). There are relics with a decoration of beads and polion of precious stones under the glass. There are bands of inscriptions with the names of saints round them in the middle, among tiny enamelled chain-links set with rubies and strings of pearls, is a small piece of the Holy Cross. On both sides there is an application of sunbeams. The figure of Christ on the cross is made of ivory, with a loincloth bound by his side. Marks are on the rim of the foot and on the rear side of the sunbeams.
