The pattern is contoured with dark green and printed with two shades of green and dark ochre, on a white calico base. The whole surface of the fabric is covered with flowery-leafy boughs, decorated with parallel lines of alternating acanthus leaves, enriched with large, blossoming tulips.
The pattern first appeared in the Leek workshop of Thomas Wardle, registered on 15th April, 1875 in Thomas Wardle’s Patternbook (Manchester, Whitworth Art Gallery).
Further samples and variants can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, in the City Museum and Art Gallery of Birmingham, as well as in the collection of the William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow.
The original pattern drawing, the wooden blocks and a high-back settee, upholstered in the blue variant of the fabric described above, can also be found in a William Morris Gallery (see: Isabelle Anscombe: Arts &Crafts Style. London, Phaidon, 1991, p. 55.)
