One of the most well-known watchmakers of the second half of the 18th century was Abraham Louis Breguet (1747–1823), who was born in Switzerland and worked in France. He developed the tourbillion in the early 1800s it combined the escapement and the pallet fork, in order to improve precision. His work made him so popular, that he was counterfeited during his lifetime to overcome this, he placed his name on various parts of the clockwork with coded marks.
The presented pocket watch is marked on both its dial and its clockwork, with the inscription Breguet a Paris. The edges feature a leaf festoon pattern made of two shades of gold. The back has an illustration enclosed in a frame with a similar ornament: a gently modelled Rococo dressed lady with a lamb.
