Plaque

An oval, standing plaquette from the 1820's, modelled on the portrait of Mary the Virgin in the Paulite church of Schossberg (in Hungarian Sasvar, today Sestin, Czechoslovakia). The model was most likely made by the sculptor of the factory, L. Forster. The plaquette shows Mary with the dead Christ in her lap, following the traditional type of Pietas. The coronet on the head of the figures is a characteristic feature of the picture. There is a tent over the figures, with a crown on the top, and curtains hanging down on the two sides. An inscription appears at the bottom: “Maria Schossberg in Hungarn”. The pieces of the series were sold at the Sasvar parish-feast, organized every year.
