A rich, symmetrical moulding of stylized foliage and scrolling ornaments with pairs of volutes is attached with screws to the narrow, vertical base-plate of the pendant. Above it a motif with the same applications: a ship, with a ronde bosse figure of the sitting Mercury, with a tiller in his right hand. The upper mouldings of the ornament — probably the mast and sail — are missing. On the rear side it is decorated with an inscription of cloisonne enamel: "Virtute duce, comite Fortuna" The pendant — because the Mercury figure — may be characterized as a peculiar variant of ship- pendants, much favoured in the renaissance and baroque periods no analogous piece is known. The content and terminology of the inscription have an antique origin — the source is presumably, (but not universally accepted as) Cicero's Epistles X. 3. 2. It is a recurrent topic of the works of early humanists and is often used in the emblematic literature of the 17th century, see: Gabriel Rollenhagen: Emblematum Centuria Secunda, Utrecht, 1613- No. 5.
